Two diverse geographical areas on the map of the world are Sudan and Rhode Island. These two differ not only in their geographical status but also in their political, economical and social make up. Sudan, an independent country with a total area of 2505, 810 sq. km (CIA Factbook 2004) belongs to the continent of Africa. It is known for its "Islamic military regime and government that dominates the national politics since its independence from the British colonies in 1956" (CIA Factbook 2004). Rhode Island as a state of the US is characterized by economic stability, high employment and low poverty as compared to Sudan. Sudan, on the other hand due to its political instability has low per capita output.

Political, economical and geographical structures are important components that can alter lifestyle of people. In the following example of Sudan and Rhode Island the author attempts to enumerate on the fact that these factors are critical differences between the two states and reason for the differences in life style.

Administrative geography

The capital of Sudan is Khartoum. The country is divided into 26 administrative states governed by English common law and Islamic law. The constitution plays a background role as it has been suspended many times due to political instability. Since 1993 the country has been under the executive leadership of President Lt. Gen. Bashir who belongs to the military regime. This is in contrast of Rhode Island's administrative geography whose capital is Providence. The state is divided into 31 townships and under the leadership of Governor Donald L. Carcieri (State of Rhode Island 2004). Belonging to a business background Carcieri unlike Bashir believes in humanitarian commitments and welfare of the state. Like other states in the US, Rhode Island also follows the US Constitution. Unlike Sudan, Rhode Island political platform is based on elected bodies for its governance. Political turmoil is not so prevalent in the state which contrasts the upheavals faced by the Sudanese.

Political

Sudan is a republic country with an "authoritarian ruling militia junta who has taken over the country since 1989. The government comprise of an alliance of the military and the National Congress party (NCP)" (CIA Factbook 2004). On the other hand Rhode Island is governed by 8 municipal governments which make it easier to monitor and govern. The political environment in Rhode Island is not regimented but it is tainted with corruption. Unlike Sudan it is not strived with multilevel corruption at the state and government level yet it is much "cleaner" in the sense that it is not strived with military coup or constitutional suspension. With such relatively stable political environment, Rhode Island people are more at ease where political corruption is concerned (ePodunk 2004).

conomical

Perhaps the most important aspect that has both of these states differing from each other is the economic condition. Sudan is a lowly-developed country with an estimated GDP of $70.95 billion (2003 est.) and a growth rate of 5.9%. The inflation rate is at a high estimate of 8.8% (2003 est.) which perhaps contribute to high unemployment rate of 18.7% (2002 est.)(CIA Factbook 2004). On the other hand Rhode Island's employment level has been growing since 2000 from 0.2% to 3.2% in 2003 while unemployment rate has remained constant at 5% for 2003 (Bureau of Labor Statistics 2004). The differences in the economical factors have contributed to the differences in the living standards and lifestyle. For example Rhode Islanders have per capita income of $21,688 (1999 est) while Sudanese merely survive through $1,900 (2003 est.). Not only the Rhode Islanders enjoy a higher income but they are also able to save on their income. Sudanese on the other hand have to survive on subsistence farming and agricultural world which contrasts Rhode Islander's freedom to enterprise and industrial environment.

Social

Sudan has a population of 39,148,162 (July 2004 est.) with the majority of the population falling under the age group of 0 to 64 years. The birth rate is estimated at 35.79 births/1,000 population (2004 est.) as compared to 9.37 deaths/1,000 population (2004 est.) (CIA Factbook 2004). On the other hand Rhode Island is a state in the United States with geographical area measuring 1045 square miles (US Census Bureau 2000) and situated in the continent of North America. It has a population of 1,076,164 (2003 est.) (Rhode Island QuickFacts 2004) with the majority of the population falling under the age bracket of 25 to 64 years old. The birth rate for 2002 has been estimated at 12197 as compared to 9877 deaths (U.S. Census Bureau 2002). With the majority of the population belonging to the working group and an industrial conducive working environment, Rhode Island enjoy a better workforce as compared to Sudanese who are not only illiterate but not equipped with skills for industrial employment. As a result there has been a fall in the standard of living among Sudanese.
